Speech Sound Disorders
Speech Matters RVA specializes in evaluating and treating speech sound disorders, which include difficulties with articulation, phonology, and motor planning (such as childhood apraxia of speech). These challenges can affect how clearly a child speaks and how easily they are understood. Using evidence-based strategies, we help children develop correct sound production so they can feel confident and communicate more effectively in everyday life.
Language Disorders
At Speech Matters RVA, we support children with both receptive and expressive language disorders. These challenges can affect how a child understands others and how they express themselves. Here's what each one means:
Receptive Language Disorder:
Receptive language is the ability to understand spoken language—like directions, questions, and conversations. A receptive language disorder means a child has difficulty processing what others are saying.
Common signs include:
Trouble following directions (even simple ones like “get your shoes”)
Difficulty answering questions
Appearing to misunderstand spoken language
Struggling to understand stories or group conversations
Expressive Language Disorder:
Expressive language is how a child uses words, phrases, and sentences to communicate thoughts and ideas. A child with an expressive language disorder may understand others but struggle to express themselves clearly.
Common signs include:
Limited vocabulary for their age
Short or incomplete sentences
Struggles with the rules and patterns of grammar,
Difficulty naming objects or finding the right words
Trouble telling stories or explaining ideas
Frustration when trying to communicate
Evaluations
We provide detailed speech-language evaluations to help identify areas that may benefit from therapy. An evaluation may not be necessary if your child has recently been assessed at school or by another provider. We’re happy to review existing evaluation reports to determine if they meet our requirements for starting services.
